Spend the day learning the theory and practice of the Deadlift and Power Clean with Starting Strength Coaches Jordan Stanton and Ryan O’Connell-Peller. The session will begin with a lecture focused on the basics of the movements and will include a discussion of the anatomy and forces at work in the lifts. We will then move into a practical session with individual coaching for all the lifters. Participants will have an opportunity to put into practice the concepts addressed in the lecture while receiving coaching through their warm up and work sets. Through the entire process, attendees will learn the hallmarks of a properly executed pull and how it should look and feel when it is performed correctly. The skills developed in the deadlift, including the use of a vertical bar path off the floor, will be applied to the power clean. After the practical session, we will return for a discussion of programming and how to identify and correct common technical problems. The camp will wrap up with a question and answer session.
Whether you are just starting out with strength training, struggling with the basics of the lift, or looking to polish your technique and understanding of these movements, you will come away with valuable insights and experience to benefit your training. Attendance will be capped at twelve to allow for individualized instruction.
Proper weightlifting shoes are highly recommended. They increase stability, control, and consistency in all of the lifts and should be considered essential equipment if barbell training is a priority. If participants use weightlifting belts, they are encouraged to bring them. Please also wear knee-high socks, or sweat pants to allow the barbell to contact the shins without causing abrasions.
Jordan Stanton: Head strength coach of Stanton Strength, Jordan has been involved in athletics from the age of six. He has been a competitive athlete in basketball, football, bowling, triathlon, strongman, and powerlifting. Currently Jordan is a high level powerlifting competitor with a 600lb squat, 405lb bench press, 650lb deadlift. You can often find him in the gym, the mountains, the swimming pool, the jiu jitsu mats or the rock wall. After receiving his BSN degree from the University of Portland in 2009, Jordan has been a practicing intensive care nurse. He uses his extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medicine to the benefit of his clients.
Ryan O’Connell-Peller: Starting Strength Certified since 2014. Brooklyn born and raised, Ryan started his career in the strength training industry with the 6-month intensive Master Course at the Focus Personal Training Institute in NYC, where he first learned the Starting Strength model of lifting. He graduated at the top of his class and was immediately hired as a personal trainer at Focus Integrated Fitness, where he began assisting new students in the barbell lifts at the weekly Focus Barbell Club. He served as a mentor for new trainers and hired interns at Focus. Ryan competed in powerlifting and newly-founded strength lifting meets, currently practices Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and works with clients of all ages, fitness levels and goals because he believes strength is crucial to life.
