Spend the day learning the theory and practice of pulling mechanics applied to both the deadlift and the power clean with Starting Strength Coaches Emily and Diego Socolinsky. The session will begin with a lecture focused on the basics of the movements and will include a discussion of the anatomy and forces at work in the lifts. We will then move into a practical session with the deadlift. Participants will have an opportunity to put into practice the concepts addressed in the lecture while receiving coaching through their warm up and work sets. Through the entire process, attendees will learn the hallmarks of a properly executed pull and how it should look and feel when it is performed correctly. The skills developed in the deadlift, including the use of a vertical bar path off the floor, will be applied to the power clean. After the deadlift session, there will be a short break for lunch (participants should bring a light lunch to eat during a short question and answer session). After lunch, participants will apply lessons learned in the morning session to the power clean. Once finished, there will be a discussion on programming and how to identify and correct common technical problems. The camp will wrap up with a question and answer session.
Whether you are just starting out with strength training, struggling with the basics of these lifts, or looking to polish your technique and understanding of these movements, you will come away with valuable insights and experience to benefit your training. Attendance will be capped at twelve to allow for individualized instruction.
Proper weightlifting shoes are highly recommended. They increase stability, control, and consistency in all of the lifts and should be considered essential equipment if barbell training is a priority. If participants use weightlifting belts, they are encouraged to bring them.
Emily and Diego Socolinsky are the owners of FIVEx3 Training in Baltimore, MD. FIVEx3 Training is a Starting Strength Gym dedicated to helping people get stronger. We offer group training barbell classes to people of all ages. Before opening FIVEx3 Training, Emily was active as a professional dancer and teacher for over 20 years. During that time, she focused on strength training and a variety of cross-training methods that helped her grow and develop as a dancer and athlete. Diego has been training in a variety of disciplines for the last 25 years. His athletic background includes martial arts, rock and ice climbing, mountaineering, running and cross-country cycling.
