Event Details

The Squat Coaching Development Camp is designed to help guide you in the process of developing your coaching skills with the help of Starting Strength Seminar Staff Coaches. The camp is intended for prospective Starting Strength Coach candidates at any level of their development – whether just starting out as a coach or ready for the platform evaluation.  Space is limited to 10 participants to ensure lots of interaction among the participants and staff.

During the squat coaching camp, we’ll take an intensive look at the how and why of the teaching methods for each lift, we’ll discuss coaching and what it takes to become a better coach, and spend lots of time on the platform where you’ll get real-time feedback on your coaching of fellow participants.  You’ll leave the camp with a better understanding of your strengths and weaknesses as a barbell coach and where you are in terms of coaching according the Starting Strength Coach standard.

You will act as both a lifter and a coach during this camp. Proper equipment including weightlifting shoes, a lifting belt, and appropriately stretchy pants or shorts is required for all participants.

Josh Wells has 20 years of experience competing and coaching in the sport of Olympic weightlifting, has been a Starting Strength Coach since January 2010, training under the watchful eyes of Mark Rippetoe since 2000. Josh received his Bachelor in Sociology and Master of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise Physiology from Midwestern State University. He was a primary coach, along with Mark Rippetoe, of the Midwestern State University and Bone Unit Olympic weightlifting teams operating under the Texas Weightlifting Regional Development Center. He has coached SS all over the US for the last 10 years and has hosted numerous SS and Olympic Weightlifting camps.

JD Shipley owns and manages Starting Strength Houston. Prior to becoming a strength coach he worked internationally in Oil & Gas construction. JD found Starting Strength in 2016, began coaching part-time in his garage in 2018, opened Starting Strength Houston in 2019, and became an SSC in 2020. He has since left the corporate world to coach and run the gym full time.
