The Susquehanna River Hills Chronicles is a fictional account of a family and the experiences of three twelve-year-old boys in rural Maryland. The setting is the area along the western shore of the Susquehanna River extending from Harve de Grace northward to Conowingo, known locally as the River Hills. The story begins at the time of the outbreak of the War of 1812, encompasses nearly a full year, and culminates with the British invasion off the town of Havre de Grace and Cecil County.
The novel revolves around the activities of Willie. He and his two friends, Leroy, a freed Negro, and Owl-Boy, a remnant of the once mighty Susquehannock tribe, roam the countryside and river, encounter villains, have perilous adventures, learn about life, and become involved with a special bobcat. There are also tales about Willie''s family and life on the farm, some taken from recollections of the author who grew up in the locality described in the book.
